Seward Johnson Sculpture Tour
"Art Imitates Life" Sculpture Installation
November 22, 2024 - April 2025
Ormond Memorial Art Museum & Gardens is honored to display two pieces from the "Art Imitates Life" sculpture installation by world-renowned American artist Seward Johnson (1930-2020) presented by the Ormond Beach Arts District from November 22, 2024 through April 2025.
The two bronze sculptures at OMAM are from Johnson’s “Icons Revisited” series. Located near the OMAM’s waterfall feature you’ll find “Can Do!,” a remarkable take on the historic Rosie the Riveter figure created to honor the women working in the factories on the home front during World War II. Inside OMAM’s Granada Pavilion Courtyard, visitors will see “Embracing Peace,” which celebrates the famous Times Square kiss captured in photographs on Victory over Japan Day on September 2, 1945.
All 13 life-size, life-like bronze sculptures are located on both public and private property along the Granada Boulevard corridor from A1A to Lewis Street and will remain through April 2025. Stroll along Granada Boulevard or venture into the City’s riverfront parks and you will find a shopper, a family photo shoot, a window washer, fishermen, dogs, a rabbit, a letter carrier on his rounds, and more. Keep an eye out for benches with a reader or a lady sorting through her purse. They are so realistic; you’ll be tempted to stop and chat. In fact, they are often mistaken for “real” people!
