Mondays, Sept. 16 - Oct. 21, 2024 | 10:30am - 1:30pm

Whether you’re a beginner or you have felted before and want to use the 6 weeks to explore your personal style and projects with some guidance this class is the perfect opportunity to do that. In this class series, focus on wet felting techniques and explore different ways to use/create with fiber. Let your imagination run wild as you learn to make wall hangings, vessels, felted rock rugs, scarves, bags, lights and more while experimenting with different techniques and materials. Beginners learn new techniques, while experienced felters can try new ways to approach old methods. The first 3 lessons will focus on materials and techniques, creating small projects. The last 3 weeks will focus on individual projects with guidance and suggestions from the instructor.

COURSE DETAILS:

Materials are included for the first 3 weeks. Additional materials will be available for purchase for the last 3 weeks, based on the project the student chooses.

WEEK 1: Introduction to wet felting wool layout options and wool choices. How to calculate shrinkage and successfully “full” your sample to create a smooth finished piece of felt. Make samples to use for coasters or small wall hangings.

WEEK 2: Introduction to using resists. A resist is used in felting to make three dimensional objects from a flat pattern. Make a felted rock planter or a vessel.

WEEK 3: Introduction to mixing materials. The technique used in Nuno felting bonds loose fiber (merino wool) into a sheer fabric, such as silk gauze or cotton cheese cloth creating a lightweight felt. Experiment with different embellishments such as string, yarn, silk/bamboo/viscous roving, wool curls, or silk paper to make samples.

WEEKS 4, 5 & 6: During the first 3 weeks we’ll talk about your plans for a project(s) and figure out what you need for supplies to create it. Using the fundamentals learned in the first 3 weeks and combining techniques your possibilities are limitless! Have fun and explore the wonders of felting!
